Drinking from the Fontana della Barcaccia – What We Learned

Fontana della Barcaccia — A Surprising Lesson on Respect & Local Customs

Located at the base of the Spanish Steps, the Fontana della Barcaccia is one of Rome’s most iconic fountains. Designed by Pietro Bernini and his son Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the early 1600s, this “sinking boat” masterpiece has been admired for centuries. Its water is connected to Rome’s ancient aqueduct system and is technically safe to drink — but should you?

🤔 What We Thought vs. What We Learned

Like many travelers, we had read online that it was perfectly fine to drink directly from the Fontana della Barcaccia or even fill a water bottle there. In fact, if you search YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram, you’ll find countless videos of tourists doing exactly that. You can even find AI responses, travel blogs, and Reddit threads suggesting this is totally acceptable — and in some cases, even encouraged. This information could not be further from the truth… or could it?

🗣 Speaking with a Local

During our trip, I asked a friendly local about the etiquette surrounding the fountain. They were very clear: Drinking from the fountain or filling your water bottle there is considered rude and disrespectful by many Italians. In the past, older police officers would actively discourage it and, depending on the act, sometimes even fine people. While modern police generally ignore it, many locals still view the act as showing a lack of respect for their cultural heritage. The message was simple: Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

👮 What the Police Said

Here’s where it gets tricky. I approached three different groups of police officers — 7 in the first group, 5 in the second, and 3 in the third — and asked:
  • Is it rude, disrespectful, or illegal to drink from the Fontana directly with your lips?
  • Is it rude, disrespectful, or illegal to fill a water bottle from the Fontana?
  • Is it rude, disrespectful, or illegal to touch the Fontana?
Some officers laughed, some appreciated the question, some found the question amusing, and others quickly dismissed the idea that it was rude at all. All groups said it was not illegal and they personally saw no problem with it.

⚖️ The Contradiction

So now we had a very different picture. Between locals, shop owners, police officers, and online research, the answers were completely contradictory. On one side, some locals were adamant it’s disrespectful; on the other, police and many Romans simply shrugged it off. This is one of those cultural grey areas where perception varies — and where being a respectful visitor means choosing the more considerate approach.

💡 Our Takeaway

Out of respect for Rome’s cultural heritage, our personal recommendation is to pay a visit, take a picture, but consider filling your water bottle at one of Rome’s nasoni — small public fountains designed for drinking and filling bottles. These are located all over the city and are the intended source for public hydration.
⚠️ Respect Tip: You’ll see plenty of tourists doing it, and you might even find police who say it’s fine — but remember, perception matters. You never know who in the crowd or online is a preservationist, local historian, or passionate Roman who sees things differently.

Mexican Marvels and Mouthwatering Morsels: Unveiling the Authentic Flavors of Cholos Comida Mexicana in Rio Hato, Panama

Shenanigans

As I stepped into Cholos Comida Mexicana, a riot of eclectic decor unfolded before my eyes. License plates lined the walls like a colorful mosaic, the bar donned corrugated metal sheeting & wood, while walls boasted intriguing paintwork. And there, a magnificent three-tiered fountain took center stage. No mozzarella sticks in sight, but even if Captain O’Hagan himself threatened a pistol whip, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the mischief and charm that exuded from every corner…

Joking aside, I loved the décor, it was worth walking around to look at it all while waiting to place your order and certainly a lovely distraction for the kiddos to see ‘all the things’.

Not Busy on a Thursday

Ah, the treacherous parking dance! As I approached Cholos on that fateful Thursday, I couldn’t help but notice the limited parking situation. It was like finding a needle in a haystack, except the haystack had only five or six spaces… tops! And who has time for investigative parking missions? Certainly not me!

But fear not, fellow hungry adventurers! As I stepped into the restaurant, a sight of culinary bliss unfurled before me. The place was as empty as my stomach on a juice cleanse! With only a sprinkle of patrons around, it was a clear sign of swift service and speedy sustenance.

So, dear readers, prepare yourselves for a dining experience where parking may be a challenge, but empty tables are your delicious reward. Just remember, when it comes to parking at Cholos, may luck be ever in your favor!

Service That Stole the Show

When my lively clan descends upon a restaurant, it’s a symphony of laughter, spills, and endless requests. My heart goes out to the brave souls who serve us, for handling our joyful chaos which is no task for the faint of heart. From juice spills to pico de gallo emergencies, the needs never cease.

But on that fateful day, our guardian angel of service emerged in the form of Ana. This extraordinary young lady graced our table with unwavering attention, kindness, and patience. Amidst the delightful chaos, she navigated the waters of our demands with grace and finesse. In our conversation, we discovered that she was pursuing online classes stateside, and to my surprise, her command of the English language surpassed that of my American buddies.

Ana’s exceptional service extended beyond her duties, as she even took the time to capture a precious moment with our little ones. Her genuine warmth and dedication added an extra sprinkle of joy to our dining experience.

The service is a masterclass in attentiveness, wrapped in a delightful blend of family and genuine care. With Ana by your side, your culinary adventure will be met with unparalleled service that transcends expectations.

The Menu

When venturing into new culinary territories, especially during our travels, I believe in exploring a wide array of menu offerings since it might be our only chance to experience them. So, I took a good look at the menu at Cholos Comida Mexicana, hoping to discover that one perfect dish. And being, what an Italian grandmother would affectionately call, a ‘big-a-boy,’ I usually opt for something on with a bit of heft. That’s why my eyes landed on the burrito ruleta, which seemed like an irresistible choice. With its delightful combination of chicken, carne asada, and chorizo, wrapped in a luscious draping of queso, I knew it was a no-brainer.

Now, I must confess my slight disappointment at not finding tacos birria on the menu. However, let me assure you that any selection I would have made blindly would have surely been scrumptious. That’s how confident I am in the culinary prowess of Cholos.

As we settled at our table, I noticed two carafes of potion, which appeared to be bright vessels of fiery peppers, plucked from the far reaches of the world…  One green and one red.  Only a single waft revealed the potions were imbued with the essence of jalapeños, serrano’s, and cilantro, perhaps a hint of habaneros, forged into a harmonious concoction.  Naturally, my curiosity got the best of me, and I couldn’t resist trying both. I even employed two tortillas as vessels for these delectable salsas. Now, for those who aren’t avid spice enthusiasts, I estimate the heat level of these salsas to be around 4,000 SHU’s (Scoville Heat Units)—a delightful tang that leaves your taste buds dancing with joy. To put it into perspective, that’s just slightly spicier than Sriracha, a beloved favorite among many. Believe me, folks, when my time comes, I will most likely have requested to be laid to rest in a coffin filled with to the brim in their captivating salsa verde.

Alicia, my dining darling, companion, opted for the Chimichanga De Pollo and proclaimed it as the best she’s ever tasted. Meanwhile, the Nachos Combo Mediano proved to be an enticing delight, and just the right size for our table. As for our little ones, they happily devoured the Hamburguesa & papas fritas—a classic hamburger and french fries combination. And before I forget…do not, I repeat, DO NOT miss out on ordering the thick cut Yucca Fries at least once while you’re in Panama. These fries possess a similar texture to potatoes resembling steak fries.  They offer a satisfying meatiness that’s sure to leave you longing for more and our kids LOVED them.

At Cholos Comida Mexicana, the menu is a treasure trove of tantalizing flavors and delightful surprises. Each dish is crafted with care, ensuring an unforgettable culinary experience that leaves you craving for another visit.

Can You Really Have Quantity & Quality?

We were all trying bites of each other’s meals, and I had to engage my 3rd and 4th stomach to hit ceramic.  I could probably have survived a week off the food now in my pouch.

I’ve been to a plethora of Mexican restaurants (sorry ya’ll, not including Taco Bell) in my day and Cholos is easily the most effortlessly best Mexican food I’ve had, and I have zero suspicion it’s anything other than authentic.

If I had my way, I would have eaten there every night.

Top Notch Service Speed

Generally I would say that during our time in Panama we needed to become accustomed to… slower… service.    Cholos was not only an exception to this, but was able to strike that happy medium between speed and not rushing us out of the restaurant.

Until I return to Panama, I’ll be dreaming of the food and memories!

An Absolute Gem in the Heart of Clayton, NY

Why Wood Boat Brewery?

The Wood Boat Brewery neighbors the St. Lawrence River and French Creek Bay nestled in the town of Clayton, NY on Mary Street.  The beautiful covered deck and peaceful surroundings creates the perfect spot for for a social drink and meal, whether you’re by yourself or in a group.

The location is a trip and fall from the Antique Boat Museum and within short walking distance of  Riverside Drive which has a slew of shops and restaurants like the Clayton Popcorn Company.

What service!

Every restaurant is supposed to serve food and drink, not all do it with a smile.  However, Wood Boat nails it!  Our server was quite knowledgeable about the menu from the front to back and gave honest suggestions based on our parties preferences.  Drinks, appetizers and meals all came out promptly with enough time between each course to allow you to savor each bite and each drop.

I’m thirsty!  Let’s talk drinks…

Starting from the clever names all the way to the last drop of your beverage, Wood Boat has a flavor for every palate.  They have flights, samplers, 12 oz. pours and growlers.   Our table sampled the River Rye, Bourbon Barrel Aged Brown Ale, Hook, Line and Sinker, Lyman Ale and Cherry Wheat.

Being a bourbon guy I, unsurprisingly, connected with the Bourbon Barrel Aged Brown Ale which was STRONG and full of flavor.  Although I do enjoy a variety of beverages, I’ve never been overly fond of sours.  That being said, truthfully, I didn’t taste a bad potation here.

Excellent nosh Petunia

Soft Pretzels

When eating at a new restaurant I like to order a smattering of items to really test their abilities.  Umm… Did you say beer cheese?  <queue Homer Simpson’s drool sound> Yes, I said beer cheese.  We started with the soft pretzels with beer cheese made from the oatmeal stout.  Once the pretzels were finished, a fight nearly broke out over who, at our table, would get to lick the ramekins clean.

Bacon Wrapped Jalapenos

Despite my ability, or rather, insanity, to venture up the Scoville scale well past 800K, jalapenos, for some reason, hit me hard.  Not these… Wood Boat deveins and seeds these jalapenos so you can enjoy the concoction of flavors offered  by the bacon, feta, cream cheese.  Don’t forget to dunk these in the raspberry balsamic sauce!

Wedge Salad

I’ve always loved iceberg lettuce, and a wedge salad is my kryptonite.  This wedge has a boat load ( pun intended ) of flavor toppings that resulted in a symphony of bold flavors… bacon, red onion, candied walnuts and gorgonzola dressing.  I thought the wedge was a little on the small size, but overall, I was not disappointed.

Reuben Pizza

Wood fire pizza rocked!  The dough was both delicious and cooked to perfection.  There was a delightful crispiness to the crust and a soft chewiness that I love.  Initially, the idea of a reuben pizza didn’t sound all that tantalizing, however, it was a match made in heaven.  Not a single flavor in this slice overpowered the other.  It made for an tasty and interesting combination.

Caprese Sandwich

To quote my father… ‘it could have used more garlic’.  This may be an Italian thing, but when someone puts garlic or basil on something, I like those flavors to be dialed up.  I was really hoping for a punch of flavors that I just didn’t get unfortunately.  was still made well.  The panini bread was delicious, all the ingredients tasted fresh and worked well together.

Regrets

There were so many great looking selections on this menu and I wished I could have tried them all, particularly, I would have liked to have tried a greater variety of their pizzas, more specifically, I’d like to see how they handled the Yum Thai Pizza.

Conclusion

I wouldn’t hesitate to go back in a heartbeat anytime I find myself in the area.  I left the restaurant filled with beer and food and in a great mood.  Thank you Wood Boat for the great experience!
